ALL SOULS’ DAY - Thursday 2nd november

Farewelling those who have died.

Human beings have sensed the mystery of death, and the pain of grief since time immemorial.  Every society has developed rites and rituals to mark the passage from life through death and to honour lost loved ones and to commemorate the dead.  The Christian Church has funeral rites in which we honour and mourn the departed and lay to rest their mortal remains while placing our hope in God's promise to bring new and unending life from death.

The funeral service leads mourners through a process and ritual journey in which the loss of one we love is acknowledged and thanks are given to God for the gift of their life and our place within it.  We listen and respond with the scriptures in which the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is proclaimed as the promise of new life.  Finally, we take our leave of the one we love as their last earthly journey to a place of rest begins. We commend them to God’s care and love as we continue our own life’s journey trusting in the goodness of God.

Standing and weeping beside the grave of his friend Lazarus, Jesus said,

“I am the resurrection and the life,” says the Lord. “Those who believe in me, even though they die, yet will they live.” Gospel of John 11. 25-26

FUNERAL SERVICE

The Church Service

The service is conducted by the Rector or other clergy and follows Anglican customs.

The introductory prayers and readings are followed by a homily provided by the clergy.

The Time of Reflection when the Eulogy is offered is the centre point of the service followed by the prayers and then farewell, with the committal in Church or at graveside or crematorium, ending with a blessing by the priest.

The Holy Eucharist may be celebrated if requested. This is especially suitable when someone has been an active member of the Church.

The Rector consults with the family to select the readings and music and hymns if included.

Members of the family will be invited to take part in the service if that is their wish.

When arrangements are finalised an Order of Service is prepared and forwarded to the Funeral Director for printing who will consult with the family on layout.

Music can be provided by an organist.  Selection of suitable music (recorded if required) and hymns (optional) is arranged in consultation with the Rector.
